I welcome the beautiful fall weather. However, the early darkness due to Daylight Savings Time (DST) has been a challenge. There is nothing worse than leaving school at 5:30 pm and walking into the darkness. It makes me feel as if my day is suddenly over. As if my personal goals did not matter for that day.
This is why I love the light and freedom of the weekend. When I enter the weekend I see the possibilities, the joy, and the light that I miss during the week. I do not see the weekend as two days. I see it as a gift of regeneration that allows me to embrace the Monday of the new week. So, even with DST, I see the possibilities of fall and winter weekends.
As a depression survivor, light is a necessity. I do not own a lamp to help with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). However, I am aware that it might be an issue, and I try to adjust my lifestyle to anticipate those issues. Based on my job, I do not get outside too often. So, that is why the weekends are valuable.
Regardless of what current studies say about DST, all humans follow a circadian rhythm, their own body clock. We need to get back to recognizing our body’s rhythm in spite of the technology that is currently available. There are other countries that choose not to follow DST. Trust your gut, get out during the weekend. Even if your time is spent running errands, you are getting the sun exposure you need.
How do you handle the shorter days during the fall and winter?
