Faux Ruin of Mick and Linda: EastEnders

What was the Carter’s secret to longevity? The majority of their relationship took place off-screen.

Now that EastEnders (EE) Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) is back in Albert Square, I had to weigh in on the Mick/Linda/Whitney (Shona McCarty) love triangle. (Yes, I’m rooting for Mickney.) I’ve read different opinions about Mick and Linda on social media. I wasn’t watching EE before Linda left town. However, I’ve seen clips and read about their backstory.

My first “Carter Experience” was watching Mick (Danny Dyer) try to deal with his depressed son and looming financial debt. When the Carters were introduced, they were going to have a marriage with “no affairs”. While that’s a noble goal for a soap, it’s unrealistic. So, I’m not too upset if Mick and Linda separate. I also don’t believe EE has ruined this couple. In fact, I appreciate that they’re writing the Carters as a real couple.

Other fans haven’t been as understanding about a possible Carter separation. When I scanned Twitter, I kept seeing the “How could writers/Sean O’Connor (SOC) ruin Mick and Linda!tweets. I can understand opinions about wanting Mick/Linda together, but saying a soap couple was ruined by SOC is a little extreme. Soaps have been splitting up couples since they began. It’s part of the soap format along with surprise parents, people back from the dead, and even demon possession (US Soap, Days of Our Lives).

That’s right, the Carters weren’t married for all of those years. (What’s that about?)

Mick and Linda’s relationship has lasted for years without conflict, which is rare in soaps. What was the Carter’s secret to longevity? The majority of their relationship took place off-screen. Mick and Linda came to Albert Square with enough baggage to fill a luggage store. They met when Linda was 14 and became teen parents not long after. After 26 years together they have raised had 4 kids, supported each other through major crises, and married for the first time. That’s right, the Carters weren’t married for all of those years. (What’s that about?)

It makes sense that the Carters go through issues after being together that long. I’m glad the writers have continued with the storyline. Now we get to see if Mick follows his heart by choosing Whitney or follows his love and obligation by choosing Linda.
