I thought yesterday’s episode was awesome! We got to see our ladies, Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) and Eve Unwin (Heather Peace), continue their storyline and blossoming love affair. Suki’s still struggling with her secret about Ranveer’s death and his attempted sexual assault. Eve is still watching over Suki concerned about her behavior.
What stood out for me was that Eve is still emotionally connected to Suki even though she decided to keep her distance. Suki wasn’t ready to come out, so Eve walked away. However, she didn’t get very far.
Eve knew right away that something was wrong with Suki beyond just sleep walking. Suki did try to open up to Eve, but Ravi got in the way. I love Eve’s support even when Suki has pushed her away. It’s rare to see older women like Suki on television struggling with their sexuality. She has followed her family’s wishes by marrying and raising a family. Yet, the real Suki was meant to come out at some point.
I’m looking forward to seeing how their relationship progresses and how Suki continues to grow as a character. I also think that #Sukeve is a better representation of an LGBTQ couple on #EastEnders. Their storyline doesn’t mirror fan-fiction, and it isn’t being written to appease a fandom. Suki and Eve come to this relationship as grown women with baggage. Yet, they are not trying to change each other or make excuses for their missteps.
