Sukeve: Finally The Love Story We’ve Waited For! (EastEnders)

You have Eve who came out as a young adult trying to love Suki who’s hid her true self away for so long.

Finally EastEnders has given us the couple we’ve been asking for: Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) and Eve Unwin (Heather Peace). I have been asking for more representation of gay women relationships since 2020 after the Pride episode aired. They hid Bernie away for a year after using her in the episode. Then when she did start dating Mollie, her surrogacy for Rainie and Stuart ended her relationship. The show killed off Tina Carter. You can’t claim the message and diversity of Pride if you only represent one type of LGBTQ relationship.

Now, four months away from 2023, we are FINALLY seeing a Lesbian relationship blossom. Suki’s journey towards accepting her true sexuality is finally being explored.

Eve & Suki: The Relationship We Need (EastEnders)

Now it’s time for EastEnders to focus on their LBGTQ ladies. Let’s start with Eve Unwin (Heather Peace) and Suki Kaur Panesar (Balvinder Sopal).

I’ve been waiting for this moment since the Pride episode two years ago. Two years we’ve waited for this moment. Now it’s time for EastEnders to focus on their LBGTQ ladies. Let’s start with Eve Unwin (Heather Peace) and Suki Kaur Panesar (Balvinder Sopal).

Since that first Pride episode the focus has been on Ben and Callum, the show’s second gay male couple. We even saw the show’s second gay male marriage a year after the episode. During this time we’ve only seen bits and pieces of the relationships between Ash & Iqra, Iqra & Mila, and Bernie & Mollie. Their screen time and storyline focus was minimal compared to Ben and Callum. Now that we will have a new EP this is the perfect time to focus on the ladies’ relationships.

Toxic Fandom, Part 2: Ballum (EastEnders)

My point is the overall EastEnders fandom is respectful and open to discussion about characters and storylines. Unfortunately, the Ballum fandom accuses EE fans of homophobia if they do not agree with their view of Ben and Callum’s relationship.

I’ve talked about toxic fans before with EastEnders. However, now that Ballum (Ben & Callum) are having actual real relationship issues, the Ballum fandom dragons are out for blood. That means long term EE fans (before Callum and knowing Ben from the beginning) are being harassed. I was accused of being homophobic against gay males because I had the nerve to hold a character, Ben Mitchell, accountable for his actions even though he was dealing with a mental health crisis. 😳 Just to be clear, this random told me to STFU because they didn’t like what I said and called me homophobic.

Are Toxic Fans Ruining EastEnders?

…there is a difference between sharing an opinion and purposely going after an EP because of something you don’t like on the show. That’s when it becomes a personal attack.

T.Lanette

Here we are again saying goodbye to an EastEnders (EE) Executive Producer (EP) and saying hello to a new EP with a new vision for the show. This time our EP, Jon Sen, stayed for three years. He came after John Yorke (2017-2018, 2nd tenure) and Sean O’Connor (2016-2017). During Sen’s tenure, EE has had high points and low points, but overall the show has improved. (Check out Duncan Lindsay’s article.) What hasn’t changed is how some fans respond to the show and the EPs.

EE fans have always been vocal on social media. Fans have an opinion about the storylines, characters, actors, and even the executive producers. Everyone has a right to share their opinions. In fact, I’m sure these opinions have helped to guide the show in some way. However, there is a difference between sharing an opinion and purposely going after an EP because of something you don’t like on the show. That’s when it becomes a personal attack.
