Freedom: Control of my Time

What does freedom mean to you?

Freedom means that I have control of my time to enjoy as much as I can while I’m alive. It means sitting in front of Starbucks sipping on my strawberry refresher while watching the cars go by.

It means sitting in my comfy lawn chairs staring at the beautiful blue sky while reading a book. The moments when I felt the most freedom was when I traveled through the UK and Ireland. I spent hours traveling through towns, visiting historic places, and marveling at the beautiful landscape. When I have that time to see the world, it’s priceless.

Freedom also means that 56+ years after the end of legalized segregation in the United States, I can experience living my life as a Black woman in the way many of my ancestors were prohibited from living before me. I am thankful for that freedom, and that I will be 56 this summer.

I’ve been in the workforce since I was 11 years old 43 years ago. I started as a “paper girl” delivering a community newspaper. Then when I was 13, I worked at a dry cleaners every Saturday. The owner hired me because I looked like I was 16.

Once I turned 16 I went to work at Bambergers ;now Macy’s) in their lingerie department. I actually made it to assistant manager by the time I was 17. My college internship in accounting turned into a full time job after graduation.

That job didn’t last long because I wanted to become a teacher. I’m am finishing up my 30th year of teaching. But… I know this won’t be my last career.
