Toxic Fandom, Part 2: Ballum (EastEnders)

My point is the overall EastEnders fandom is respectful and open to discussion about characters and storylines. Unfortunately, the Ballum fandom accuses EE fans of homophobia if they do not agree with their view of Ben and Callum’s relationship.

I’ve talked about toxic fans before with EastEnders. However, now that Ballum (Ben & Callum) are having actual real relationship issues, the Ballum fandom dragons are out for blood. That means long term EE fans (before Callum and knowing Ben from the beginning) are being harassed. I was accused of being homophobic against gay males because I had the nerve to hold a character, Ben Mitchell, accountable for his actions even though he was dealing with a mental health crisis. 😳 Just to be clear, this random told me to STFU because they didn’t like what I said and called me homophobic.

This has been an ongoing problem with the Ballum fandom. In the beginning I was accused of fetishizing the couple as a heterosexual fan. Now when I comment on the storyline based on character history (and following the storyline), I’m told to STFU and go feed my kids. 😳

Why did this person assume I had kids? Why did they assume they weren’t fed? That’s insensitivity to me. I didn’t have kids due to circumstances beyond my control. If I did, of course they would be fed. I value kids. I worked as a teacher in real life for 28 years. Guaranteed this Twitter troll is the age of one of my former students.

The minute you hold one of the characters accountable or don’t wrap them in “hugs”, you are homophobic. This should be called out. Random accusations of homophobia shouldn’t be tolerated.

[Ben’s] character history, past and current, won’t change based on him being with Callum. His relationship with Callum also shouldn’t give the Ballum Fandom the comfort of calling other EastEnders homophobic when they don’t agree.

EastEnders has never been about two characters. It’s been about a community of characters. It will still be that way long after Ballum. Ben is a character many of us have known long before some of the Ballum fans were born. His character history, past and current, won’t change based on him being with Callum. His relationship with Callum also shouldn’t give the Ballum Fandom the comfort of calling other EastEnders fans homophobic when they don’t agree.

I’m doing my part. This person called me homophobic in a tweet before the one posted above because I was “speaking too much on gay men’s relationships”. 😳 That person had a problem that I didn’t embrace their “FanFic” version of Ballum. EastEnders fans shouldn’t be accused of being homophobic because they don’t bow to the Ballum fandom opinions. Their toxic behavior will make the overall EastEnders fandom like Ben and Callum less as a couple.
